JHS EVENT - Golden Jubilee Celebrations

08.06.2015.

John Hornby Skewes are a musical instrument distribution company based in Garforth (UK) that have survived 50 years in an extremely competative industry. It's tough out there these days to make this kind of business pay, yet JHS continue to grow and grow. A lot of this has to do with their own instrument brands being so successful, brands like Vintage and Fret-King, both of which Jamie endorses. It is these endorsements that led him to be invited to be involved in a very memorable performance at the JHS HQ to celebrate this impressive anniversary. Many big names performed and Jamie and his good friend Gavin Coulson (Swear Box, Supergroup, Gav Coulson Group) performed a memorable set with Guy Griffin and Paul Guerin (Quireboys, Joe Elliott's Down 'n' Outz,) Dave "Bucket" Colwell (Bad Company, Samson, Humble Pie,) and Robert Henrit (John Verity Band, Argent, Kinks.)

Recently, a brand new guitar effects pedal manufacturer called Xvive burst onto the scene with a very high quality range of tiny and inexpensive pedals. When Xvive decided to expand their range with pedals designed specifically for bass, they turned to Jamie, who has helped them design a wonderful new bass compression pedal called the B1 Bass Squeezer. Check out Jamie's demo, made for Jamie TV above.

27.03.2015.

Jamie Mallender TV Episode 10. In March 2015, The Paddy Maguire Band spent 7 days working with the students of Backstage Academy at LS-Live in Wakefield, UK. The band set up in the studio live room and the students set up a full rig for the band to perform with as thought they were doing an actual gig. The students also set up recording gear to capture each performance. The band performed songs old and new and did a spot of writing, ate a lot of chips and played too loud for McBusted in the studio next door.

They're here to save clubland!

16.03.2015.

Jamie, "This is a very important announcement for me. Very early on in my music career I started playing working mens clubs. If I'm completely honest, as I like to be, it was because the money was far better than any other gigs available to me at the time. I enjoyed my time on the clubs though, and no matter what band I've been playing in or where I've been touring, I've always been happy to come home to the UK and go back to playing pubs and social clubs. However, it has been a while now since I've graced that circuit. But since I started the Swear Box project, lots of people have been trying to steer me towards putting the band on some club stages. It's something I didn't want to rush into, I've given it a lot of thought and here's what's happening. Swear Box is a loose band of floating members. The line-up changes depending on who is available from my pool of excellent players. The Social Club version of the band will be named Supergroup and will feature a steady line-up. The set will be tailored to suit the circuit also. But don't expect tacky cheesy clubland crap. This will be a smoothly executed set of cool, classic music from a variety of legendary bands, performed 100% live. The band will be booked by my good friend Mr Neil Tomlinson at The Act Store: 0114 2205455. I'm looking forward to revisiting some of the clubs that still put live rock music on stage and catching up with some people I haven't seen in some time."

20.01.2015.

Jamie was so excited about this latest pedal from Xvive that he made a demo for it.

He has also been developing in close association with Xvive, a bass compressor pedal. The pedal has now been perfected ready for imminent launch, so expect a demo video of The Bass Squeezer from Jamie soon.

The truth is that the gig list changes quickly and it's hard to keep the website up to date, but as of today - this is how the next 3 months look. Please pay special attention to the gigs I have with John Verity at the end of January. These will be very special dates, not to be missed if you can help it folks. Much love, peace, Jamie."

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!

01.01.2015.

Jamie, "Happy New Year everyone. Right now I'm really pleased to be where I am. The early part of 2014 was a bitch. I was beginning to feel like I was ready for the scrap heap, but then I realised that I just needed to choose much more carefully who I worked with and what projects I should and shouldn't get involved with, and it worked a treat - I'm back with a bang! I'm now involved with 4 main bands in a live playing capacity, all of which are really exciting. My diary for 2015 is already looking very healthy with lots of live work, recording sessions and tons of teaching. Right now, every gig, every lesson, every single note I play is an absolute joy - even the special ones! This couldn't have happened without you guys. Your love and support makes me strong and all I can do in return is say "Thank You!!!" The continued support of Rotosound, Hartke, SNARK, Xvive, Fret-King and Vintage also means the world to me. I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you all love, health and happiness for 2015. Please stay tuned!"

T.Rex

22.12.2014

Big News! Jamie has joined one of his favourite bands. He is now the bass player for T.Rex.

Jamie, "I grew up listening to a lot of glam rock, and T.Rex were always my favourite. I am thrilled to be working alongside original drummer Bill Legend in an all new version of the band, respectfully performing those charming and unforgettable classic Marc Bolan tunes that have been like a soundtrack to my life, all of my life. We got together recently to rehearse and it just sounded magical straight away. I really enjoyed playing through the 15 song set and can't wait to do it again."

The band:-

Drums : Bill Legend

Vocals : Danny Mccoy

Harmony Vocals : Claudi Schell-McCoy

Keyboards + Guitar : Lee Swindon

Guitar : Ross McEwen

Bass : Jamie Mallender

27.08.2014

The video Jamie made of the build of his new pedalboard has suffered a few technical issues on YouTube. It was searchable, then it wasn't, it was shareable but then it wasn't - there was a problem over the monetization and so on and so on. We can only presume it has something to do with the title setting off alarm bells in some kind of content filter. But, it would seem to be ok now - so for all you gear junkies and pedal nerds - here it is, the birth of the minimutha.

16.08.2014

Recent months have seen Jamie's date sheet, session recording activity, and roster of students get busier and busier. He teaches an average of 25 guitar and bass lessons a week, performs with The Paddy Maguire Band, The John Verity Band, Swear Box (which he also runs,) deps regularly for several different bands, he organises jam nights, records sessions, sets up, repairs and modifies guitars and basses and is also currently contributing some soundtrack music for a film. Unfortunately, all this activity has delayed release of any new solo material, though we can reveal that there are some finished tracks in the bag. We've just been informed that in September there will be not one, but 2 trips to Holland, where The Paddy Maguire Band are the most requested band on the blues circuit. There are more trips overseas being discussed currently too, yet more than anything, Jamie seems very excited about his new pedalboard. The Mothership it seems, is no more and has been replaced by a smaller board he's named The Minimutha. A video of the construction of this new board was recorded for Jamie TV with Tyler Huntingdon, student of Jamie and Bass Player for Metropolis (www.metropolis-rock.co.uk) We'll post the video here as soon a it escapes the editing process and more gig dates.

Also, new live pics have been added to the Photo album.

Xvive Pedal Endorsement

20.07.2014

Jamie recently became an endorsee of Xvive Effects Pedals. He has always made it clear that he will only put his name to products that he believes to be of the highest quality, and that he uses himself. Jamie says, "Xvive pedals are tiny, made with high quality components, designed intelligently to make them versatile yet practical, and they are very inexpensive." So could this be the end of The Mothership Pedalboard? "I've been carrying the huge pedalboard around for some time now. There was a time when there was no choice, but now that Xvive have made it possible, I'm looking at making a much smaller, and more importantly, lighter board but still with lots of sounds on it. Perhaps I'll call it, The Minimutha." Jamie will be making demos of Xvive Pedals - check out the 1st one by clicking on the picture to the left of this text.

21.07.2014 - exciting update! Check out the Gear Page, Media Section or Jamie's YouTube Channel for the 2nd Xvive Demo - The V6 Phase King.

Swear Box

14.07.2014

Recently, Jamie has probably been seen playing with more bands than ever before. One band in particular though, caused quite a stir at their 1st gig on 11th July at The Milestone, Crystal Peaks, Sheffield. Here's Jamie with a few words about it, "I've found that I can no longer have a full diary playing for just one band. So, I've just been whoring myself out there playing for anyone who needs me. I find it very exciting and challenging to just fill in, it keeps me on my toes. I'll learn a bands entire set in a couple of days if there's time, or sometimes I'll get the call and I'm straight in the car and just jam. There's nothing to fear but fear itself!  I also joint-host a lot of jam nights, and through all this loose, off-the-cuff style playing I've sort of accidentally set up a little side band. We're all in other bands, (and by the way, I wouldn't quit the Paddy Maguire Band for anyone!) and sometimes you get offered a gig and someone in your band can't do it, so the idea is - Swear Box can do that gig! We don't rehearse, we just jam it out. The guys really are that good! We just feel our way and follow the changes - no song will ever be played the same way twice! The first gig went down so well, I was really moved by the response. I was also very happy to see so many people show up. There was a lot happening that night, and we did pretty well for bums on seats. The setlist is whatever comes to mind, or whatever the audience shout out and we fancy a bash at. We're keeping it fresh and exciting and of course, 100% live. So thanks Andy Frith for having us on, bloody well done to Andrew Barber on gob, Chillo Angelini on multiple guitars and Simon on tubs, and massive thanks to the superhero of the day, PA lending sex machine - Ellis Kennedy." Anyone wishing to book Swear Box should e-mail jamiemal@hotmail.co.uk for further info.

A Blog From Jamie 01.06.2014

01.06.2014

"This weekend I've had the pleasure of performing 3 gigs with great friends old and new. On Friday I played guitar for Zee in Leicester, and then The Rose & Crown in Greetland, Halifax on Saturday and The Cross Keys, Siddall, Halifax on Sunday afternoon with The Paddy Maguire Band, back on my excellent Fret-King basses. Sundays gig featured many special guests and much jamming. I've had a really enjoyable weekend. Lots of laughs, made new friends, played serious songs, stupid songs and jammed some stuff I sort of knew and some stuff I really didn't. It was a blast. And it has got me to thinking you know, life is short. Fill it with stuff that makes you happy. I'm really happy with my situation at the moment. I seem to have found a balance that has eluded me for the past couple of years. I'm a member of The Paddy Maguire Band, and I couldn't be happier about that. The band suits me and I'm really proud to be part of it. I'm also depping with many different bands. Recently I've played with The Gav Coulson Group, The John Verity Band, THOR, ZEE, The Marcus Lazarus Band,  I've jammed with literally hundreds of people and this friday - 6th June I'll be tearing up Chesters in Chesterfield with The Zenon Band. If there's a Paddy gig in the diary then I'm spoken for, but otherwise, if you're looking for a stand-in musician and you're a trustworthy decent person, maybe I'm your guy. But if you're a twat, don't call me, I've put up with enough twats to last me several lifetimes. Also, I'm coming to the end of a hefty session recording job I've been working on for a theatre show, so I'll get back to some solo recordings soon. More news as it happens. Be nice to each other folks, much love, Jamie."

The Last Ever Paddy Maguire Midnight Jam Closes The Hebden Bridge Festival

28.05.2014

From Jamie's Facebook 27.05.2014, "I kept hearing about The Hebden Bridge Blues Festival, but I was never in the right kind of band to get to play it. And I'm always working, I don't just go to festivals if I'm not playing them, so I figured Hebden would be another one of those things that everyone else says is awesome but I never get to do. But, by accident last year I stumbled into the blues world and have now stood in as emergency bass dep with several blues/rock bands and of course, I play for The Paddy Maguire Band full time now, which is mega! Life took an accidental sidestep and I seem to have become part of a world I wanted to be involved in but didn't know how to get there and then suddenly - I'm here! Anyway, for some reason Mr Paddy Maguire didn't book himself to play Hebden this year, but he did ask me to stand in on bass for his good friend Marcus Lazarus with Bob PetersJenna HoosonSean FitzpatrickRichard Townend and Paddy himself of course! So I learned the set and turned up on the Sunday, the last day of the festival with the beautiful Donna Het Field on my arm and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Hebden Bridge is a beautiful part of the world, and this little town was absolutely jumping. There's music everywhere you turn and it's all incredible. The atmosphere was one of the best feelings I've ever experienced anywhere in the world. Not a bit of trouble anywhere, the whole thing was just perfect. Except for just one thing, it was the final day of the final ever festival. This is especially sad news for me, as I've only ever experienced it that once, and everyone seems to think I must know the reasons why and people keep asking me..... but as yet I don't. But whatever Paddy and Jason Elliott's reasons are, I'd just like to say that this event is one of the finest things I've ever attended. I'll remember it always. So thanks guys, thank you for Hebden. Thank you to everyone involved and to all the new friends I've made once again in this blues community I seem to have been welcomed into so very warmly. The last several months have been incredible and have reminded me why I started playing music in the first place. I'd love to tag all the new friends I've made and everyone I had the great pleasure of jamming with, but I daren't because I might miss someone, which just wouldn't be cool and groovy. Take care all of you and I hope to see you all again, a little further up the road. xx"

Pete Marsh - Artist

24.05.2014

Jamie is very proud to work with John Verity, so it's a bit of a shame that no photographs surfaced from the 3 exciting gigs he performed with John this month. However, artist Pete Marsh made a number of sketches at Sound Control in Manchester on the 9th and has now completed 2 works in oil. Jamie is thrilled with the images he has seen of the paintings. Pete Marsh is having an open studio this weekend. You can check out his work by clicking on the painting to the left.

12.05.2014

Jamie has just completed 3 full weekends of proper old fashioned gigging, taking in Blues festivals and trips to Scotland and the north of England with the Paddy Maguire Band and then another stint with The John Verity Band. John Verity is one of the finest blues rock guitar/vocalists in the world, has a string of credits to put most people to shame and a discography as long as your arm. He also has a signature Fret-King guitar to his name (www.fret-king.com) If you don't know who John Verity is, slap yourself in the face very roughly, and then go to www.johnverity.com and check out what you've been missing out on. John has a new album called "Tone Hound" which is a knockout blend of old school blues with John's fiery rock guitar mastery. This album in particular, showcases his abilities as a producer. You can hear every note every instrument plays on every song, and his powerful yet soulful voice sounds better than ever. Check out John's site for details of how to order this masterpiece - it's an education.

Check out the photo album for updates. Unfortunately no photographs have surfaced from any of the John Verity gigs.

07.04.2014

Jamie, "With Uncle Stan having bitten the dust after 1 gig, the sheer embarassment of that fact, the financial loss my family has suffered as a result and the huge waste of time the project has been, I was not a happy chap. Travelling to Holland to play with U.K. Blues legend Paddy Maguire, with Jenna Hooson on staggering guest vocals and all round superb bloke, shuffle king and road manager Peter Tallent, then coming home to play another awesome gig depping on Bass for Mike Kaperys with my good friends Joe Tulley, James Tulley, Lee Dodge and Kev Hill in the incredible rock band that is THOR - The Gods Of Rock - was just what I needed to blow off some steam. So, here are 3 bits of good news to focus on. Firstly, I'm very happy to say that I will be continuing to work with Paddy Maguire as a full time member of his band. Bonus!!!! Secondly, I will be working with John Verity again on the 9th, 10th and 11th of May!!!!! Third, Wayne Miles my old school mate (lead vocals and keys in Uncle Stan) and I will continue working together on a blues based recording project I'll reveal more about soon. I'm a bit bogged down with session recording right now, but when it is done I will be looking at releasing some new solo material too and making some more Jamie TV episodes. Thank you everyone for your continued support, keep it 100% live and crank up the bass!"

Paddy Maguire Dates can be located at www.paddymaguire.com

John Verity Dates:-

9th May - Sound Control Manchester

10th May - Bootleggers Kendal

11th May - Boot And Shoe, Ackworth

Jamie Mjölnir Mallender

02.04.2014

Questions have been flooding in about Jamie's recent band venture, Uncle Stan - from people wanting a gig list, to people wanting to book the band. The band suddenly ceased to work together and Jamie has confirmed that the band will not be continuing. He is not however, prepared to make an official statement about it at this time. Jamie will however, be performing with THOR on Friday 4th april 2014. Jamie, "This Friday, for 1 night only, I will be elevated to the status of a god! As Mike Kaperys  has a prior engagement I will be standing in for him on Bass with THOR. We will performing 100% Live at The Punchbowl in Sheffield. With Uncle Stan dead in the water, a huge professional disappointment, it was great to pop over to Holland to do a short tour with The Paddy Maguire Band and take my mind off it. We had a great time, but how do you follow that? By joining Lee Dodge, James Tulley, Joe Tulley and Kev Hill in THOR to perform a set of classic rock covers to die for. So turn to the 4th of April in your diary and simply write, "It's Hammer Time!"

Hooray For Holland!

15.03.2014

In September 2013 Jamie joined Peter Tallent and Paddy Maguire on a last minute mini-tour of Holland. The gigs must have been very well received because the lads are off there again at the end of this month. Here's Jamie with a bit of background, "It was kind of a weird one, but it came at just the right time for me. I love my work and I am grateful for the good fortune I've had in almost always being in paid work and the opportunities I've had to work with so many talented people. Music has taken me to many different countries and I've experienced things many people only dream of. But, when you're a musician for a living you have to take the gig that pays over the gig that you'd love, a steady working regular paying band over the adventure that might lead you to exciting new musical places. Sad but true. In fact, in recent years you'd be suprised to hear of some of the exciting gigs I've turned down, because there is little or no money in them, and I have mouths to feed. As much as I love music, my family has to come first. Anyway, it had been a good while since I'd played in a band that was 100% live, and I was crying out for a chance to work with some old school proper musicians, a chance to jam and improvise and go boldly where no bass player has gone before. I felt like my skills were getting very rusty as a live musician and I needed something of a challenge. But, just as I thought it was about time for me to be put out to pasture, I got a message from an excellent bass player called Lincoln J Roth. He said he'd been asked if he was available to do a tour in Holland in a couple of days time and he couldn't do it so he wanted to put me forward. Long story short, Peter Tallent had booked his own band some dates in Holland and the band had pulled out at the last minute. Still determined to honour the gigs he'd enlisted Paddy Maguire, who I'd heard a lot about and he just needed a bass player to complete a blues jamming trio. So I said yes and the next day we met up in Newark to play a gig! None of us had ever worked together before and in fact I'd never even met the guys, but they seemed really cool and we had a laugh together right from the word go. Then Peter counted 4 into the first tune and off we went, into 2 full sets of improvised thrown together jamming - and it was excellent! It was like being set free. We also had the fabulous Jenna Hooson sing with us for a few songs - which was just the icing on the cake. The next morning we were off to Holland (without Jenna sadly) for a very rewarding and successful tour. We had a great time and I felt like I'd found my ability to play again. I knew then that I needed to somehow make a change. I needed to feel like this on a much more regular basis. It wouldn't happen overnight but I did have other similar rewarding experiences last year, with John Verity and The Gav Coulson Group. These experiences gave me some hope and ideas and rekindled my excitement for playing live and for blues based music. I'll be forever grateful for that opportunity and I couldn't be happier to say that we're going back to Holland, this time with Jenna as special guest at every gig - to catch up with some of the friends and fans we made and to hopefully make many more. We're not even a proper band as such - but I just know it's gonna be great. The blues fans in Holland were very sweet to us last year and I can't wait to be there again, making proper music."

25.02.2014

Uncle Stan are about to hit the road. 1st March sees the band perform their first gig at Jamie's favourite pub (the one he calls his local even though it isn't,) legendary music venue - The Midland, Killamarsh. The Midland has been closed for a few weeks, but has now been refurbished and re-opened with the lovely Ivy at the helm. Ivy continues the pubs tradition of suporting live music - so all we need now is you. Get down to The Midland on Saturday and check out Uncle Stan's harmony fuelled, 100% live, old school musical prowess.

Uncle Stan

04.02.2014

Jamie has a new band to talk about. "Uncle Stan is a lighthearted name for a band that is very serious about making great music, but we have a lot of fun doing it. We have tried our best to put together a very varied set of material, consisting of classic songs of all eras, rather than just banging out the predictable song choices. We have all been members of Eaglesque, a band with a reputation for our harmony work - which sadly seems to be a dying art, but fear not, this outfit is taking that harmony work to a new level. Between us we know a huge amount of material, so you never know exactly what might end up in the set - and we are 100% live so by all means shout out a request, it's not like we're going to have to refuse because we don't have the correct backing track for your favourite song! It has been such a relief getting back to that old school approach of music first. The heart and soul of music is in the hands of the performers, not the hard drive of a laptop. We're having a lot of fun and making a great noise - we just want to get out there and entertain people and enjoy ourselves." Please see the Uncle Stan page for more info.

02022014

02.02.2014

"Thanks so much to the great many of you that have sent me happy birthday wishes today. I'm a little overwhelmed and there's no way I could even begin to thank all of you personally. I've had a very enjoyable day, but it feels a little weird - I haven't done the slightest bit of work all day. Back to it tomorrow, with a rehearsal with the new band."

Happy Birthday Jamie.
